Guess the Town
Questions about Guess the Town
The short answers to the things people ask most.
How do the clues work?
Every puzzle has six clues written from vague to specific. Clue 1 is about the landscape or climate and could describe dozens of places. Clue 2 is about the era or history, clue 3 about what the town does or is known for, clue 4 about a distinctive feature, and clue 5 about something famous that nearly names it. Clue 6 gives the state or country and a well-known landmark or nickname. A wrong guess or a Skip opens the next clue, so you never see more than you’ve earned.
When does a new town arrive?
A new town arrives every day at midnight Sydney time (AEST or AEDT, depending on daylight saving). Everyone gets the same town on the same day, wherever they are, and the game shows a countdown to the next one once you’ve finished. Each puzzle is numbered, starting from #1.
Where are the towns from?
Australia and New Zealand: capital cities, regional cities, suburbs, country towns and a few very remote places, in every state and territory plus the North and South Islands. They come from the same atlas of 434 towns used in our NeverSpend games. Each puzzle town is picked once and never repeated.
Is it free?
Yes. Guess the Town is free to play in your browser, with no account, no sign-up and nothing to download. The site is supported by the occasional ad and by our shop, where you can find mugs, stubby holders, phone cases and colouring books from our games.
Is my progress saved?
Your game in progress, your streak, your stats and your settings are saved in your own browser, on your own device, so a reload picks up where you left off. They aren’t tied to an account, so clearing your browser data or switching device starts you fresh.
Can I see yesterday’s answer, or play older puzzles?
Once a day is over, its puzzle moves to the archive. Every archive page shows the six clues in order, the answer, a short write-up of the town and a few facts. Today’s puzzle stays hidden until the day is over, so nobody gets the answer by accident.
Will there be Easy and Hard modes?
We’re planning them. Easy will give you a letter of the town for each wrong guess. Hard will have no dropdown list, so a misspelling counts as a miss. They’re shown as “coming soon” in the game’s settings.
